MOWING TIPS

CAUTION: Do not use de-thatcher blade attachments on your mower. Such attachments are hazardous, will damage your mower, and could void your warranty.

  • Under certain conditions, such as when mowing very tall grass, raise the mower height on the first cut to reduce pushing effort, to avoid overheating the motor, and to avoid leaving clumps of grass clippings. Make the second cut to the desired height.
  • For extremely heavy cutting, reduce the width of the cut.
  • For side discharge operation, cut in a counterclockwise direction, starting at the outside of the area to be cut, to spread grass clippings more evenly and to put less load on the motor. To keep clippings off of walkways, flower beds, etc., make the first cuts in a clockwise direction.Weed Eater WE20X Cordless Lawn Mower 11
  • When using a lawn mower in moist, heavy grass, clumps of cut grass may not enter the grass catcher. Reduce ground speed (pushing speed) and/or run the lawn mower over the area a second time.
  • If a trail of grass clippings is left on the right side of the lawn mower during rear discharge operation, mow in a clockwise direction with a small overlap to collect the clippings on the next pass.
  • Pores in cloth grass catchers can become filled with dirt and dust with use, and the catcher will collect less grass. To prevent this, regularly hose the catcher off with water and let it dry before use.

MULCHING MOWING TIPS

IMPORTANT: For best performance, keep mower housing free of built-up grass and trash. See “CLEANING” in the Maintenance section of this manual.

  • The special mulching blade will recut the grass clippings many times and reduce them in size so that, as they fall onto the lawn, they will disperse into the grass and not be noticed. Also, the mulched grass will biodegrade quickly to provide nutrients for the lawn. Always mulch with your highest motor (blade) speed, as this will provide the best recutting action of the blades.
  • Avoid cutting your lawn when it is wet. Wet grass tends to form clumps and interferes with the mulching action.
  • For best results, adjust the lawn mower cutting height so that the lawn mower cuts off only the top one-third of the grass blades. If the lawn is overgrown, it will be necessary to raise the height of cut to reduce pushing effort and to keep from overloading the motor and leaving clumps of mulched grass. For extremely heavy grass, reduce the width of your cut by overlapping the previously cut path and mowing slowly.Weed Eater WE20X Cordless Lawn Mower 12
  • Certain types of grass and grass conditions may require that an area be mulched a second time to completely hide the clippings. When doing a second cut, mow across (perpendicular) to the first cut path.
  • Change your cutting pattern from week to week. Mow north to south one week, then change to east to west the next week. This will help prevent matting and graining of the lawn.

STORAGE

Immediately prepare your lawn mower for storage at the end of the season or if the unit will not be used for 30 days or more.

LAWN MOWER

When the lawn mower is to be stored for a period of time, clean it thoroughly, remove all dirt, grease, leaves, etc. Store in a clean, dry area.

  • Clean entire lawn mower (See “CLEANING” in the Maintenance section of this manual).
  • Lubricate as shown in the Maintenance section of this manual.
  • Be sure that all nuts, bolts, screws, and pins are securely fastened. Inspect moving parts for damage, breakage, and wear. Replace if necessary.
  • Touch up all rusted or chipped paint surfaces; sand lightly before painting.

HANDLE

You can fold your lawnmower handle for storage.

  1. Loosen the two cam locks on the sides of the upper handle and allow the handle to fold down to the rear.
  2. Loosen the two handle knobs on the sides of the lower handle, lift the sides of the lower handle past the edges of the handle brackets, and pivot the entire handle assembly forward and allow it to rest on the mower.
  3. When setting up your handle from the storage position, the lower handle will require manual locking into the mowing position.Weed Eater WE20X Cordless Lawn Mower 13

IMPORTANT: When folding the handle for storage or transportation, be sure to fold the handle as shown, or you may damage the control cables.

BATTERY

IMPORTANT: Battery should always be stored in a fully charged state. Charge every two weeks, even when not in use. (See “To Prepare Battery” in the Assembly section of this manual.)

WARNING: Do not store the battery in temperatures lower than 32° F (0° C).

OTHER

  • If possible, store your unit indoors and cover it to protect it from dust and dirt.
  • Cover your unit with a suitable protective cover that does not retain moisture. Do not use plastic. Plastic cannot breathe, which allows condensation to form and will cause your unit to rust.

Weed Eater WE20X Cordless Lawn Mower-FAQs

What size lawn mower do I need for a ½-acre yard?

For a half-acre lawn, a walk-behind mower with a cutting width of 20 to 30 inches is usually ideal. This size balances efficiency and maneuverability, helping you finish the job faster without making the mower too heavy or clumsy. If your yard has lots of obstacles, narrower decks can help you navigate around trees and tight corners more easily. A cordless mower like the Weed Eater WE20X with an 18–20 inch deck can work well for this size yard if you’re okay taking a bit more time.

Is the Weed Eater WE20X cordless mower good for medium-sized lawns?

The Weed Eater WE20X cordless lawn mower can be a good choice for medium-sized lawns, especially up to about half an acre, depending on your grass and terrain. Battery-powered mowers offer quiet operation and lower maintenance than gas models, and modern lithium-ion batteries can deliver enough runtime for moderate mowing jobs. If you have thicker or taller grass, you may need to mow in stages or swap in a spare battery.

How long can the battery run on a cordless mower like the WE20X?

Battery runtime varies with grass height, deck size, and mowing conditions, but most cordless lawn mowers like the Weed Eater WE20X offer between 30 and 60 minutes of runtime per charge. For a half-acre lawn, this might cover the job if the grass is well-maintained and not overgrown. If your lawn is dense or tall, having a second battery on hand can help you finish in one session without waiting to recharge.

What are the advantages of a cordless mower over a gas mower?

Cordless electric mowers like the WE20X deliver quiet operation with zero direct emissions, lower maintenance needs, and easier starting compared to gas mowers. You don’t need to mix fuel or perform carburetor maintenance, and the electric motors provide consistent power throughout the cut. They’re also lighter and easier to maneuver, but they rely on battery life, so managing runtime is a consideration for larger yards.

Can the Weed Eater WE20X handle tall or thick grass?

While the Weed Eater WE20X is capable of cutting most lawn grasses, extremely tall or very thick grass can challenge its battery and motor more than a gas-powered mower would. For regularly maintained lawns, it should perform reliably. If your lawn has patches of heavy growth, you may need to mow more slowly or make multiple passes. Regular trimming and mowing help keep the work easier and more efficient.

How do I maintain a cordless lawn mower like the WE20X?

Maintaining a cordless mower is generally low-key compared to gas models. You’ll want to clean grass clippings from the deck and blades after each use, keep the blade sharp, and charge and store the battery in a cool, dry place. Unlike gas engines, there’s no oil or carburetor maintenance, but you should periodically inspect the wheels, cables, and safety features to ensure everything works smoothly and safely.

What is the best cutting height for my lawn with a mower like the WE20X?

The ideal cutting height depends on your grass type, but most lawn grasses do well when cut between 2.5 and 3.5 inches. Taller heights generally encourage deeper root growth and help shade out weeds. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade’s height at a time, known as the “one-third rule,” to prevent stress and promote a healthier lawn. Adjust your mower deck to suit conditions for optimal results.

Are more blades on a mower better than fewer blades?

More blades can offer a cleaner, finer cut by recutting clippings more times as the mower moves forward, which is especially helpful if you want finer grass clippings for mulching into the lawn. However, additional blades also demand more power and can reduce battery runtime on cordless models. Two or three blades on an 18–20 inch deck often hit a good balance for battery-powered mowers like the WE20X.

What common problems might I encounter with a cordless mower?

With cordless electric mowers, common issues often relate to battery performance, such as reduced runtime over time, slow charging, or diminished power if the battery gets too hot or too cold. You might also face buildup of grass clippings under the deck if not cleaned regularly, or occasional blade dullness that needs sharpening. Most problems are easy to fix with battery care and basic cleaning.

How long do lawn mowers typically last?

The average lifespan of a lawn mower, whether cordless or gas, tends to fall between 10 and 15 years, depending on use and care. Cordless electric mowers like the WE20X may see longer life in the deck and motor, but battery packs often need replacement sooner, usually every few years depending on charge cycles and storage conditions. Regular maintenance and proper storage help maximize longevity.
