UL-classified fire protection

Your safe is classified by Underwriters Laboratories, an independent testing organization, to pass the following rigorous standards of fire protection:

  • 1-Hour UL Fire Endurance Test
Subjected to temperatures up to 1700°F (927°C) for 1 hour, the safe interior will remain below 350°F (177°C) to protect documents. (This enables your safe to withstand even high-temperature
exposure, as the hottest part of a fire, moves through a building.)
  • UL Fire Impact Test (Model 1235)
After being heated to 1550°F (843°C) the safe is dropped 30 feet onto the rubble, then cooled, inverted, and reheated to 1550°F (843°C) for 2 hours. The safe remains intact and locked, with an
    interior temperature below 350°F (177°C).
  • UL Explosion Hazard Test
Subjected to a flash fire in a 2000°F (1093°C) furnace for Ys hour, the safe will not explode or rupture.

Locating and securing your safe

WARNING! Do not move your safe with the door open. The door is heavy. If it swings, it can cause injury.

Note: When the door is closed, you may notice a slight gap between it and the safe cabinet or some play in the door. This is normal and does not affect performance.

For maximum fire safety

Keep your safe on the lowest floor possible. If a fire damages the flooring, there will be less danger of injury to firefighters below, or of damage to your safe’s contents. In the event of a fire, tell the firefighters where your safe is, so they can keep it cool and retrieve it after the fire.

To help deter theft

Your safe features a combination or electronic lock designed to provide reasonable security for the contents. No safe is theft-proof, however. With the right tools, time, and skill, any safe can be opened. Therefore, for greater security:

  • Place your safe with the hinge away from the wall and the door opening next to the wall. This makes it harder to pry open.
  • If possible, conceal your safe.
  • Keep your safe closed and locked when not in use.
  • You may bolt your safe to the floor, using the instructions included in this information.
  • Don’t keep your combination or access code near the safe, and don’t tell it to others.
  • Don’t tell other people where you keep your safe — except the fire department, if there is a fire.

Lost combination, access code, or keys

Lost combination or access code: First, find your safe’s Serial Number (included in this packet, and printed on the small label beside the door hinge). Then call Sentry Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-
828-1438 Monday-Friday. Lost keys: To obtain replacement keys, check the silver cylinder on your lock for your key code—a number, letter, or blank. Send this key code along with a check or money order (U.S. funds) for $5.00 to: Sentry Group, Dept. 200,900 Linden Avenue, Rochester, NY 14625-2784 USA.

If you need help, call Sentry Customer Service toll-free at 1-800-828-1438 Monday and Friday.

What to store in your safe

Your Sentry product is Ul-classified to protect documents from the typical building fire. Valuable or hard-to-replace documents that need protection include:

  • Insurance policies
  • List of possessions for insurance purposes (home inventory)
  • Titles, deeds, contracts
  • Birth certificates, marriage: licenses, legal decrees and agreements
  • Stock and bond certificates
  • Financial records (tax, mortgage, and other loans, receipts, canceled checks)
  • Diplomas, certificates, licenses, transcripts
  • Health care information
  • Wills and trusts
  • Pet registrations

Many other important items need fire protection, too, and can benefit from storage in your Sentry product. These include:

  • Family heirlooms—diaries, letters, clippings, scrapbooks
  • Collections
  • Photograph
  • Childhood mementos
  • Keepsakes with sentimental value

No pearls or leather, please.

  • Pearls may become discolored from exposure to heat.
  • Wallets, leatherbound books and other leather or suede items can draw moisture, causing damage. They should not be stored in your safe.

Routine care

Your Sentry safe will last a lifetime with very little care. For trouble-free performance, you only need to:

  • Dehunidify your safe periodically. Moisture in the insulation causes humid conditions inside the safe. Once a week or as needed, leave the safe door open for a few hours while you are present. Take out any damp items and dry them thoroughly before replacing them.
  • Keep in your safe the special purpose papers that were packed there by the factory. The flat brown paper is treated to inhibit corrosion, and the quilted brown paper is designed to absorb excess moisture.
  • When the quilted brown paper feels damp, take it out to dry in sunlight, then put it back in your safe. (Do not try to heat it; this can cause a fire)
  • Lubricate your safe’s hinges and dial once a year with small appliance oil or spray lubricant.
