OPERATION MANUAL

A. FOR THE FIRST USE

  1. Remove the coffee maker from the package and check the accessories according to the list.
  2. Clean all the detachable components according to the section “Cleaning and Maintenance.” Then assemble them completely.
  3. Ensure the steel mesh is in position. Place the carafe on the removable shelf.
  4. Operate the appliance according to sections “B” and “C” (no coffee powder in the steel mesh). Repeat 2–3 times.

B. MAKE ESPRESSO COFFEE

  1. Remove the tank cover by turning it counterclockwise. Pour appropriate water into the water tank with the carafe. Do not exceed the maximum capacity. Note: 1) The carafe has cup marks; the maximum tank capacity equals 4 cup marks of water quantity. The minimum tank capacity equals 2-cup mark water quantity.
  2. Before pouring the water into the water tank, be sure the power cord is unplugged from the power outlet and the steam knob is in the 1 position.
  3. Replace the tank cover by turning it clockwise until it locks in position.
  4. Put the steel mesh into the funnel. Add coffee powder to the steel mesh with the measuring spoon. One spoon of coffee powder makes about one cup of top-grade coffee. Then press the coffee powder tightly with the tamper. Note: ① Select your desired coffee powder to make the desired cups of coffee; the steel mesh has 2-cup and 4-cup marks. ② Please use the designated coarse coffee powder. If you use fine coffee powder, there will be some defective conditions.
  5. Make sure the tubers on the funnel align with the grooves in the appliance, then insert the funnel from the “INSERT” position. Fix the funnel into the coffee maker firmly by turning it anti-clockwise until it is locked in the “LOCK” position (see Fig. 1).SowTech CM5409-UL Espresso Coffee Machine User Manual 2
  6. Place the carafe on the removable shelf.
  7. Plug the power cord into the outlet. Turn the steam knob2 to the position, and the indicator will illuminate. Wait for about 2 minutes; the coffee will start flowing out.
  8. After the desired amount of coffee is obtained, turn the steam knob to the1 position, the indicator goes out, and the coffee maker stops working. Your coffee is ready now. Then remove the carafe and turn the steam control knob3 to the position to release the residual steam in the tank. WARNING: Do not leave the coffee maker unattended during operation, as you may need to operate it manually sometimes!
  9. Before removing the steel mesh or opening the tank cover, make sure the pressure in the tank is released. Turn the steam knob to the first3 position; steam in the tank will eject from the frothing device. After pressure is released, wait for the steel mesh to cool down, then remove the steel mesh or open the tank cover.
  10. After finishing making coffee, take the funnel out by turning it clockwise, then pour out the coffee residue while pressing the steel mesh with the press bar. Let them cool completely, then rinse under running water. (When assembling the steel mesh again, turn the press bar back to its original position.)

C. FROTHING MILK / MAKE CAPPUCCINO

You get a cup of cappuccino when you top up a cup of espresso with frothed milk.
Method:

  1. Prepare espresso first in a container big enough according to part “B. Make Espresso Coffee.”
  2. Fill a jug with the desired amount of milk for each cappuccino. Use whole milk at refrigerator temperature (not hot). Note: The recommended jug diameter is not less than 70±5mm. As milk increases in volume, ensure the jug is tall enough.
  3. Turn the steam knob to 3the position; the indicator will light up.
  4. Insert the frothing device about two centimeters into the milk. After about 2 minutes, steam will come out from the frothing device. Froth the milk by moving the vessel round from up to down. Note: Please don’t fill too much water (≤150ml), otherwise the steam amount will be small, and the water content in the frothed milk will be too high.
  5. When the required frothing is reached, turn the steam control knob to 1the position to stop frothing. Then remove the jug and turn the steam control knob to 3the position to release residual steam in the tank. Note: ① Clean the steam outlet with a wet sponge immediately after the steam stops generating, but take care not to get hurt. ② You can only open the tank cover after draining water vapor and releasing pressure.
  6. Pour the frothed milk into the prepared espresso. The cappuccino is ready. Sweeten to taste and, if desired, sprinkle the froth with a little cocoa powder.

Note: Allow the appliance to cool down before making coffee again; otherwise, a burnt odor may occur in your espresso.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

  1. Cut off the power source and let the coffee maker cool down completely before cleaning.
  2. Clean the housing of the coffee maker with a moisture-proof sponge often. Note: Do not clean with alcohol or solvent cleanser. Never immerse the housing in water.
  3. Detach the funnel by turning it clockwise, remove coffee residue inside, and clean it with a cleanser. Rinse thoroughly with clear water.
  4. Clean all detachable attachments in water and dry thoroughly.
  5. If the steam tube is clogged, use the cleaning pin to unclog it.

Note: The cleaning pin can only be used to unclog the steam tube. Keep it out of reach of children to prevent danger.

CLEANING MINERAL DEPOSITS

  1. To ensure your coffee maker operates efficiently, internal piping remains clean, and coffee flavor stays optimal, clean away mineral deposits every 2–3 months.
  2. Fill the tank with water and descaler to the MAX level (the ratio of water to descaler is 4:1; refer to descaler instructions). You may use citric acid (available from chemists or drug stores) instead of descaler (100 parts water to 3 parts citric acid).
  3. Follow the “B. Make Espresso Coffee” procedure. Put the funnel (no coffee powder) and carafe in place.
  4. Turn the steam knob to 2the position; the indicator will illuminate. Make two cups of coffee (about 2 oz). Then turn the steam knob to the position and wait for 5 seconds.
  5. Turn the steam knob to3 the position and make steam for 2 minutes, then turn it to the 1position to stop the unit immediately. Let the descaler sit in the unit for at least 15 minutes.
  6. Restart the unit and repeat steps 4–5 at least three times.
  7. Turn the steam knob to the 2position to brew until no descaler is left.
  8. Brew coffee (no coffee powder) with tap water at the MAX level. Repeat steps 4–5 three times (no need to wait 15 minutes in step 5). Brew until no water is left in the tank.
  9. Repeat step 8 at least three times to ensure the piping is clean.
