Other Consumer Safety Information

WARNING Electrical Shock Hazard: This product is provided with a polarized plug (one wide blade) to reduce the risk of electric shock. The plug fits only one way into a polarized outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the plug by modifying the plug in any way or by using an adapter. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, have an electrician replace the outlet.

The length of the cord used on this appliance was selected to reduce the hazards of becoming tangled in or tripping over a longer cord. If a longer cord is necessary, an approved extension cord may be used. The electrical rating of the extension cord must be equal to or greater than the rating of the appliance. Care must be taken to arrange the extension cord so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop, where it can be pulled on by children or accidentally tripped over. To avoid an electrical circuit overload, do not use another high-wattage appliance on the same circuit with this appliance.

How to Toast

Before first use: New toasters may emit an odor during first use. This is normal and does not affect performance. We suggest running the first cycle once without any bread. Unplug. Allow to cool.

  • Plug into the outlet.
  • Place appropriate food items in slots.
  • Select toast shade by turning Shade Selector clockwise or counterclockwise from 1 to 7.
  • Press Bread Lifter down. Select (bagel) or (defrost), if desired. The program cannot be activated unless the Bread Lifter is latched down.
  • When toasting a bagel, add the bagel to the slots, press Bread Lifter down, and press the (bagel) button after the toast cycle has started.
  • When using defrost, press the defrost button after the toast cycle has started.
  • NOTES: Bread Lifter will not latch down unless the toaster is plugged in.
  • Frozen foods may require an additional toasting cycle.
  • Bread will pop up automatically at the end of the cycle.
  • To stop the toasting cycle sooner, press the (cancel) button or lift the Bread Lifter.

NOTE: Do not heat toaster pastries (such as Pop-Tarts®) in a toaster—use a toaster oven. If you must use a toaster, ALWAYS set it to the lowest shade setting; NEVER heat cracked, broken, or warped pastries; and NEVER leave it unattended. ®Pop-Tarts is a registered trademark of the Kellogg Co.

Care and Cleaning

NOTE: If the toaster is used daily, the crumb tray should be cleaned daily.

  1. Unplug. Allow to cool. DO NOT turn the toaster upside down. Gently tap sides to release crumbs.
  2. Slide out the crumb tray, discard crumbs, and wipe the tray with a clean cloth. Slide the crumb tray back into place.
  3. Wipe the outside of the toaster with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleansers that may scratch the surface of the toaster.
  4. To protect against crumbs becoming lodged in buttons, DO NOT turn the toaster upside down to release crumbs; this may affect the operation of the toaster. Tilt the toaster and gently tap the sides to release crumbs, then empty the crumb tray.

Tips

  • To remove food that becomes lodged in slots, unplug the toaster from the outlet and allow it to cool. Use a non-metal utensil to loosen food from the grill wires, allowing it to fall into the crumb tray. Empty crumb tray.
  • Toasting is affected by the temperature of the bread. Room-temperature bread may toast to a medium color on a medium setting. The same type of bread that has been refrigerated may require a darker setting to reach a medium color.
  • If the toaster is plugged in and the elements are not glowing red, food will get toasted. While toasting, elements do not have to be red to be working properly.

Proctor Silex 22661 Plastic 2 Slice Toaster-FAQS

How does a toaster work step by step?

When you press the lever down, an electromagnet holds the bread in place. Heating elements warm up to toast the bread. A built-in timer releases the magnet when the selected browning level is reached, and springs lift the toast up automatically.

How do you use a 2-slice toaster?

Insert bread into the slots, choose your desired browning setting, push the lever down, and wait until the toast pops up when finished.

What should I do before using the toaster for the first time?

Remove all packaging and stickers, wipe the exterior with a damp cloth, place the toaster on a stable surface, and plug it into a proper power outlet.

What do the toaster control settings mean?

The dial controls browning level. Lower settings produce light toast, while higher settings make darker, crispier toast.

How long does one toasting cycle take?

A single cycle usually lasts between 1½ to 3 minutes, depending on the browning setting selected.

How do I start toasting bread?

Simply place bread in the slots, select the browning level, and press the lever down until it locks.

Does the Proctor Silex toaster turn off automatically?

Yes. The toaster shuts off automatically and pops the bread up when the toasting cycle is complete.

How do I prevent my toast from burning?

Use a lower browning setting, avoid re-toasting bread multiple times, and remove crumbs regularly.

How do I clean a Proctor Silex toaster?

Unplug the toaster and let it cool. Remove and empty the crumb tray, wipe it clean, and clean the exterior with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Can I wash or rinse my toaster with water?

No. Never put water inside the toaster or rinse it under water, as this can cause electric shock or damage.
