How to Calibrate the Spreader
It is necessary to calibrate your spreader after assembling it, or it may spread the incorrect amount of product.
Set Micrometer
Turn the micrometer until 6 is centered in the window.
Position Spreader
Stand the spreader on its handle with the Scotts logo facing away from you. Press gently with your foot on the control lever and observe the position of the shutoff bar.
Check Shutoff Bar
With your foot on the control lever, the front edge of the shutoff bar at the bottom of the hopper should line up with the calibration line engraved into the bottom of the hopper. You may need to pull the shutoff bar towards you to see the calibration line.
Adjust Calibration Screw
If the shutoff bar covers the calibration line, turn the adjustment screw counter-clockwise. If the bar is below the line, turn the adjustment screw clockwise.
How to Apply Product
For best results, follow the Scotts® Annual Lawn Care Program™, and for seeding projects, use Scotts® Pure Premium® Grass Seed.
Set Rate
Find the rate setting for “Scotts Drop Spreader” found on the back of the Scotts product package. Turn the micrometer until that number appears in the micrometer window.
Fill Hopper
With the spreader hopper closed (trigger control away from the handle), fill the spreader over a patch of bare ground or driveway/sidewalk. DO NOT fill the spreader on the lawn. Sweep up any spilled product.
Apply
Start walking, then squeeze and hold the trigger to release the product.
Application Tips
- For rectangular lawns, apply two header strips at each end of the lawn and then go back and forth.
- For irregular-shaped lawns, apply one header strip around the entire lawn, and then go back and forth.
- To avoid streaks or misses, slightly overlap each strip over the edge of the previous strip. Line up the arrow on the hopper with the wheel track from the previous row. Do not use the wheel for alignment.
Spreader Maintenance
- Never leave product in the spreader. Pour leftover material back into the package and seal the package tightly.
- Wash the spreader after each use.
- Lubricate axle bearings with light oil.
- Store in a dry place.

Scotts AccuGreen 1000 Turf Builder Classic Drop Spreader-FAQs
Q1. How do I use the Scotts AccuGreen 1000 drop spreader?
Fill the hopper with seed or fertilizer, set the correct spreader setting, and walk steadily while pushing the spreader. Release the lever only when moving forward.
Q2. What’s the difference between a drop spreader and a broadcast spreader?
A drop spreader drops material directly beneath the spreader for precise coverage, while a broadcast spreader scatters it widely over a larger area.
Q3. How do I set the correct spreader settings?
Check the product bag for recommended settings. For example, grass seed may require lower settings (1–2), while fertilizer often needs medium settings (3–5).
Q4. How do I calibrate the Scotts AccuGreen 1000?
Mark off a test area, apply fertilizer at the recommended setting, then weigh the applied amount. Adjust settings if too much or too little is dispensed.
Q5. Can I use the Scotts AccuGreen 1000 for salt or ice melt?
No, this model is designed only for lawn seed and fertilizer, not for salt or de-icing products.
Q6. What maintenance does a drop spreader need?
Clean the hopper, drop plate, and holes after each use. Store in a dry area to prevent rust, and lubricate moving parts regularly.
Q7. How fast should I walk while spreading?
Walk at a steady pace of about 3 mph (a brisk walk) to ensure even distribution.
Q8. What are common problems with drop spreaders?
Issues include uneven spreading, clogs, or rust. Regular cleaning, correct settings, and proper storage help prevent these problems.
