Brita Water Filter Change Reminders
Getting Started with Your Standard Filter
Thank you for choosing Brita®, the world’s No. 1 brand of household water filtration. Brita’s certified water filtration systems turn ordinary tap water into cleaner, great-tasting drinking water. At Brita, we believe small steps can make a big difference, and each of us can do our part to drive positive change. By switching from drinking bottled water to using reusable bottles with your Brita® pitcher or dispenser, you can generate less waste* and save money. This User’s Guide is for the standard Brita® filter (model #OB03). For Brita® LONGLAST® (model #OB06) user instructions, or refer to the instructions provided in Brita® LONGLAST® filter replacement packs.
- Wash your hands with soap and water, then remove the filter from the filter bag. NOTE: It is normal for a new filter to be wet when first opened. Filters are washed during manufacturing to prevent them from drying out.
- Hand-wash pitcher/dispenser, lid, and reservoir periodically with a mild detergent. Do not wash in the dishwasher. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Rinse well. TIP: For Pattern Series Pitchers, if water gets trapped under the sleeve, let the pitcher air dry upside-down at room temperature.
- Flush filter with cold, running tap water for 15 seconds.
- Insert the filter into the reservoir by lining up the groove in the filter with the ridge in the reservoir. Press firmly to ensure a tight seal. Fill the reservoir with cold tap water.† Discard your first three pitchers of filtered water (or first dispenser), or use this
water for plants. It is normal for carbon dust to appear in your first fillings. - Be sure to activate the electronic indicator (if applicable). Please refer to either the Filter Change Indicator (Dual Mode) or the Filter Change Indicator (Single Mode) instructions, depending on what your indicator looks like
For best results when filling the itcher/dispenser reservoir, pour tap water on the side of the
reservoir rather than directly on top of the filter. Allow water to filter completely before
pouring or refilling the reservoir. The Brita® standard filter keeps a healthy level of fluoride,
a water additive that promotes strong teeth (applies to fluoridated municipal tap water).
To register your system and find more information on product usage, filter and product recycling, and new products from Brita, there are no bottles to throw away. Hot water should not be used with the Brita standard filter (max. 85°F/29°C – min. 32°F/0°C).
Filter Change Indicator (Dual Mode)
INDICATOR INSTRUCTIONS (TO BE COMPLETED WHEN INSTALLING A NEW FILTER):
Reset your filter change indicator every time you replace your filter. Filter replacement is essential for the product to perform as represented.
- To reset the indicator, press the STATUS button and hold it down. If using the standard Brita® filter (white in color), hold down the STATUS button for 2 seconds and then release. All lights will blink simultaneously twice, and then the green light next to the STANDARD FILTER will blink three times by itself. This indicates that the standard filter mode (40 gallons) has been selected. If using the Brita® LONGLAST® filter (blue in color), hold down the STATUS button for 6 seconds. Do not release until the green light next to the LONGLAST® FILTER has blinked green three times by itself. This indicates that the LONGLAST® filter mode (120 gallons) has been selected.
- If you accidentally select the incorrect mode, repeat the step 1 instructions above until you successfully select the mode that correlates with the filter being used.
- FILLING FOR PITCHERS WITH A “MAX FILL” LINE: Open the Fill Lid completely. Always fill the reservoir with water all the way to the provided “Max Fill” line. Close the Fill Lid. The indicator light will blink after each time you fill the reservoir and close the Fill Lid. A blinking green light indicates that the filter is good. FILLING FOR LAKE PITCHER: Place the center Fill Lid under the faucet and fill the reservoir until the Fill Lid closes. Allow water to filter completely before pouring. The light will blink after water is poured from the pitcher. A blinking green light indicates that the filter is good.
- Check filter life status at any time by pressing the Status button for 1 second and releasing. The light corresponding to the current filter status will blink for 1 second.
- When 0% of the filter life remains, the red light next to REPLACE will blink, indicating the filter should be replaced.
- Replace the filter and reset the indicator (see step 1).
IMPORTANT:
- ONLY keep the FILL LID open for more than 5 seconds IF you are filling the reservoir with water.*
- ALWAYS wait until the reservoir is empty before refilling.*
Filter performance is not certified after the life of the filter (40 gallons for the standard filter and 120 gallons for the Brita® LONGLAST®). Changing your filter regularly helps ensure you have cleaner, great-tasting water. The indicator contains a nonreplaceable, sealed battery. After several years of use, the indicator will stop working, but the pitcher/dispenser is still functional. Continue to change the filter regularly as directed.

Brita Water Filter Change Reminders-FAQs
How do I know when my Brita filter needs to be changed?
Check the filter life indicator on your pitcher. Most filters need replacement after about 40 gallons of water or every two months. You may also notice slower water flow, bad taste, or unusual odor.
How do I reset the Brita filter reminder?
After installing a new filter, press and hold the RESET button for 2 seconds on electronic models. For sticker-based indicators, adjust the date to mark the next replacement time.
Can I use a Brita filter more than once?
Filters are designed for single-use until their recommended lifespan. Some can be rinsed lightly to remove surface debris, but full reuse isn’t advised as it reduces effectiveness.
How should I prepare a new Brita filter for use?
Soak the new filter in cold water for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. After inserting it into the pitcher, run 2–4 liters of water through it to flush out any carbon dust.
What happens if I don’t replace my Brita filter on time?
Old filters can harbor bacteria, reduce water flow, and allow contaminants like chlorine and heavy metals to pass through. Drinking from an expired filter may be worse than drinking tap water.
Why is my Brita still flashing red after changing the filter?
The indicator light may need to be manually reset. Press the RESET button for 2 seconds to clear the alert.
How long should I run water through a new filter before drinking?
After installing a new filter, flush 2–4 liters of water through it to remove carbon dust and activate the filter.
Can I put hot water or other liquids in my Brita pitcher?
No. Always use cold tap water. Hot water or liquids like juice may damage the filter and reduce its effectiveness.
How can I prevent mold or algae in my Brita pitcher?
Clean the pitcher monthly with warm water and white vinegar. Replace filters on time and store the pitcher in a cool, dry place, ideally in the refrigerator.
Is carbon dust from the Brita filter harmful?
No. Small black particles are just activated carbon granules and are harmless. They can be flushed out during the initial rinsing process.
