Ames Instruments 63985 Infrared Laser Thermometer-FAQs

How does an infrared laser thermometer work?

It detects infrared radiation emitted by an object, converts it into heat, and generates a voltage output proportional to the infrared energy. This output is then used to determine and display the temperature.

How do I change the settings on my infrared thermometer?

Press the “MODE” or “SET” button to adjust the settings. A single press may switch between °C and °F, while multiple presses allow access to additional temperature settings.

Where is the most accurate place to take a temperature reading?

For the best accuracy, point the thermometer 3-5 cm away from the temple, aligning it with the end of the right eyebrow without touching the skin.

    How do temperature sensors work?

Temperature sensors use two metals that generate an electrical voltage or resistance in response to temperature changes. As the voltage increases, the temperature reading rises.

Why is my infrared thermometer not reading correctly?

Ensure the sensor is clean, the thermometer is positioned correctly, and that no hair, sweat, or cream is blocking the measurement area. Also, note that forehead readings are usually 0.5°F to 1°F lower than oral readings.

How can I check if my infrared thermometer is accurate?

Use the ice bath method by placing the thermometer in an ice bath and ensuring it reads 0°C (32°F). This is a simple way to verify accuracy at low temperatures.

What is the difference between infrared and laser thermometers?

Infrared (IR) thermometers measure the infrared radiation emitted by objects. Laser thermometers use a laser pointer for aiming but still rely on infrared technology for temperature measurement.

Why is my infrared thermometer giving high readings?

The thermometer may have been exposed to extreme heat. Remove the batteries and place the device in a cool, shaded area for 30 minutes to an hour before trying again.
