IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
When using electrical appliances, basic safety precautions should always be followed, including the following:
- Read all instructions.
- Do not touch hot surfaces. Use handles or knobs.
- To protect against electrical shock, do not immerse the cord, plug, or base unit in water or other liquid.
- Close supervision is necessary when any appliance is used by or near children.
- Unplug from the outlet when not in use and before cleaning. Allow to cool before putting on or taking off parts.
- Do not operate the appliance with a damaged cord or plug, or after the appliance malfunctions or has been damaged in any manner. Return the appliance to an authorized service facility for examination, repair, or adjustment.
- The use of accessory attachments not recommended by this appliance manufacturer may cause injury.
- Do not use outdoors.
- Do not let the cord hang over the edge of the table or counter, or touch hot surfaces.
- Do not place on or near a hot gas or electric burner, or in a heated oven.
- Extreme caution must be used when moving an appliance containing hot food, water, or other hot liquids.
- Always attach the plug to the appliance first, then plug the cord into the wall outlet. To disconnect, turn any control to “off”, then remove the plug from the wall outlet.
- Do not use the appliance for anything other than its intended use.
SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
POLARIZED PLUG (120V Models Only)
This appliance has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other). To reduce the risk of electric shock, this plug will fit into a polarized outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully in the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician. Do not modify the plug in any way.
ELECTRICAL CORD
The cord of this appliance was selected to reduce the possibility of tangling in or tripping over a longer cord. If more length is needed, use an extension cord rated no less than 15 amperes. (For 220-volt rated products, use an extension cord rated no less than 6 amperes.) When using an extension cord, do not let it drape over the working area or dangle where someone could accidentally trip over it. Handle cord carefully for longer life; avoid jerking or straining it at outlet and appliance connections..

How to Use
This product is for household use only.
Note: The Measuring Cup provided is based on 5-1/2 oz. (150 g) rather than a standard measuring cup of 8 oz. (227 g).
The RC400 series can handle 7 scoops of dry rice—16/8 oz. (227 g) cups cooked. The RC550 series can handle 10 scoops of dry rice—24/8 oz. (227 g) cups cooked.
- Before first use, wash the inner Cooking Bowl, Lid, Measuring Cup, and Serving Scoop in warm, soapy water. Rinse and dry well.
- Before placing the Cooking Bowl into the Cooker, be sure the Heating Plate and the outside of the Bowl are clean and dry. Don’t let loose rice or particles fall into the Cooker. The Bowl must fit snugly onto the Heating Plate to ensure proper contact for cooking. Place the desired amount of rice into the Bowl. Add cold water (See Cooking Guide) up to the exact level indicated on the side of the Bowl. For example, for 4 cups of uncooked rice, fill with water to the “4” level mark. By adding too much water, you may cause the unit to boil over.
- Taste/hardness will vary depending on the quality/type of rice and length of time it is cooked (see Cooking Guides). For a softer, fluffier rice, add a little more water; for firmer, crunchier rice, add a little less water. You may need to experiment to suit your taste. Note that brown rice takes longer to cook than white rice and requires more water.
- Place the Lid on the Rice Cooker. Plug it into a standard electrical outlet. The WARM light will come on. Push the “On” Switch down, and the COOK Indicator Light will come on (A). As the rice expands and cooks, steam will come out of the Vent in the Lid. Do not place the Cooker directly under your cabinets. Slight spattering is normal. Note: Cooking will begin only when the “On” Switch is pushed down and the Cooking Bowl is in position in the unit.
- When cooking is done, the Cooker will automatically switch to WARM (the WARM Indicator Light will come on) and will continue until the unit is unplugged. Rice can be kept warm for several hours. Note: DO NOT try to prevent the Cooker from switching to the WARM cycle. DO NOT immediately depress the Switch again after it has begun the WARM cycle.
- Fluff rice with the serving scoop and mix in ingredients such as minced vegetables, if desired.
- When done, unplug the unit. Always clean the Cooker thoroughly as soon as possible after each use.

Note: It is not recommended to prepare instant rice or wild rice in these rice cookers.
Care and Cleaning
- Always unplug and allow to cool completely before cleaning.
- NEVER place the body of the Cooker in water or other liquid.
- Detach the Cord and clean the body by wiping the inside and outside surfaces with a damp, soapy cloth and drying thoroughly.
- If water accidentally gets into the Switch area or onto the Heating Plate, allow it to dry thoroughly before using the Cooker.
- The Cooking Bowl, Lid, Measuring Cup, and Serving Scoop should be washed in warm, soapy water. They are NOT dishwasher safe. If crusty rice sticks to the bottom of the Bowl, soak the Bowl to loosen the rice. Do not use abrasive cleaners or metal scouring pads—they may scratch or dent surfaces and could result in poor contact with the Heating Plate.
IMPORTANT:
- When cooking a small quantity of rice, be sure to add the correct amount of water to avoid boiling over. Do not keep small amounts of rice warm in the Cooker for extended periods.
- As rice cooks, a thin crust may develop on the bottom of the Cooking Bowl. This crust is chewy, and many people enjoy eating it. With parboiled and brown rice the crust may be browned on the botton. The crust can easily be peeled off and discarded, if preferred.
- Use the plastic spatula (or a wooden spoon or paddle) to stir and remove rice—don’t use metal utensils that can scratch or dent the cooking Bowl.
NOTE: If the power supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer or its service agent, or a similarly qualified person, in order to avoid a hazard.
