Safety Instructions

General Power Tool Safety Warnings

Warning sign WARNING: Read all safety warnings and all instructions.

Failure to follow the warnings and instructions may result in electric shock, fire, and/or serious injury.

Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.

The term “power tool” in the warnings refers to your mains-operated (corded) power tool or battery-operated (cordless) power tool.

Work area safety

  • Keep the work area clean and well-lit. Cluttered or dark areas invite accidents.
  • Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks, which may ignite the dust or fumes.
  • Keep children and bystanders away while operating a power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.

Electrical safety

  • Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodified plugs and matching outlets will reduce the risk of electric shock.
  • Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded surfaces, such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is earthed or grounded.
  • Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock.
  • Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for carrying, pulling, or unplugging the power tool. Keep the cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges, or moving parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of electric shock.
  • When operating a power tool outdoors, use an extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock..
  • If operating a power tool in a damp location is unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD) protected supply. Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.

Personal safety

  • Stay alert, watch what you are doing,g and use common sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a power tool while you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating power tools may result in serious personal injury.
  • Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye protection. Protective equipment such as a dust mask, non-skid safety shoes, a hard hat, or hearing protection used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal injuries.
  • Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in the off-position before connecting to a power source and/or battery pack, picking up, or carrying the tool. Carrying power tools with your finger on the switch or energising power tools that have the switch on invites accidents.
  • Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
  • Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. This enables better control of the power tool in unexpected situations.
  • Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing, and gloves away from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery, or long hair can be caught in moving parts.
  • If devices are provided for the connection of dust extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can reduce dust-related hazards.

Power tool use and care

  • Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power tool for your application. The correct power tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it was designed.
  • Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
  • Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the battery pack from the power tool before making any adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of accidentally starting the power tool.
  • Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or these instructions to operate the power tool. Power tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
  • Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, and any other condition that may affect the power tool’s operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly maintained power tools.
  • Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less likely to bind and are easier to control.
  • Use the power tool, accessories, and tool bits, etc., in accordance with these instructions, taking into account the working conditions and the work to be performed. Use of the power tool for operations different from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.

Battery tool use and care

  • Recharge only with the charger specified by the manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of battery pack may create a risk of fire when used with another battery pack.
  • Use power tools only with specifically designated battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create a risk of injury and fire.
  • When the battery pack is not in use, keep it away from other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys, nails, screws, or other small metal objects, that can make a connection from one terminal to another. Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns or a fire.
  • Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally occurs, flush with water. If liquid contacts the eyes, additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the battery may cause irritation or burns.

Service

  • Have your power tool serviced by a qualified repair person using only identical replacement parts. This will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.

Safety Instructions for Band Saws

  • Hold the power tool by the insulated gripping surfaces when performing an operation where the cutting accessory may contact hidden wiring. Cutting accessories contacting a “live” wire may make exposed metal parts of the power tool “live” and could give the operator an electric shock.
  • Use clamps or another practical way to secure and support the workpiece to a stable platform. Holding the work by your hand or against your body leaves it unstable and may lead to loss of control.
  • Keep your hands away from the sawing area. Do not reach under the workpiece. Contact with the saw blade can lead to injuries.
  • Only bring the power tool into contact with the workpiece when switched on. Otherwise, there is a danger of kickback if the cutting tool jams in the workpiece.
  • When the cut is completed, switch off the power tool and then pull the band saw blade out of the cut only after it has come to a standstill. In this manner, you can avoid kickback and can place down the power tool securely.
  • Use only undamaged band-saw blades that are in perfect condition. Bent or dull band-saw blades can break or lead to kickback.
  • Keep lubricants or oil away from the band-saw blade. Completely wipe off excess oil before cutting. Otherwise, the band-saw blade can slip.
  • Do not apply strong pressure to the band-saw blade during operation. Excessive pressure can cause the band-saw blade to slip or break. This poses a risk of injury.
  • After switching off, do not stop the band-saw blade by applying lateral pressure to it. The band-saw blade can become damaged, breakk or lead to kickback.
  • Do not touch the band-saw blade directly after the working process until it has cooled down. The band-saw blade becomes very hot while working.
  • Hold the power tool firmly with both hands and make sure you have a stable footing. The power tool can be more securely guided with both hands.
  • Always wait until the power tool has come to a complete stop before placing it down. The application tool can jam and cause you to lose control of the power tool.
  • In case of damage and improper use of the battery, vapours may be emitted. The battery can catch alight or explode. Ensure the area is well ventilated and seek medical attention should you experience any adverse effects. The vapours may irritate the respiratory system.
  • Do not open the battery. There is a risk of short-circuiting.
  • The battery can be damaged by pointed objects such as nails or screwdrivers, or by force applied externally. An internal short circuit may occur, causing the battery to burn, smoke, explodee or overheat.
  • Use the battery only in the manufacturer’s products. This is the only way in which you can protect the battery against dangerous overload.

Bosch GCB 18V-127 Professional Cordless Band Saw-12 Protect the battery against heat, e.g., against continuous intense sunlight, fire, dirt, water,er and moisture. There is a risk of explosion and short-circuiting.

Technical Data

Bosch GCB 18V-127 Professional Cordless Band Saw-13

  • Depends on the battery in use
  • Limited performance at temperatures < 0 °C

Values can vary depending on the product and are subject to application and environmental conditions. For further information www.bosch-professional.com/wac.

Noise/Vibration Information

Noise emission values determined according to EN 60745‑2‑20.

Typically, the A-weighted sound pressure level of the power tool is 79 dB(A). Uncertainty K = 3 dB. The noise level when working can exceed the volume stated. Wear hearing protection!

Vibration total values ah (triax vector sum) and uncertainty K determined according to EN 60745‑2‑20:

Sawing metal: ah < 2.5 m/s2, K = 1.5 m/s2.

The vibration level given in these instructions has been measured in accordance with a standardised measuring procedure and may be used to compare power tools. It can also be used for a preliminary estimation of exposure to vibration. The stated vibration level applies to the main applications of the power tool. However, if the power tool is used for different applications, with different application tools, or poorly maintained, the vibration level may differ. This can significantly increase the exposure to vibration over the total working period.

To estimate the exposure to vibration accurately, the times when the tool is switched off or when it is running but not actually being used should also be taken into account. This can significantly reduce the exposure to vibration over the total working period.

Implement additional safety measures to protect the operator from the effects of vibration, such as servicing the power tool and application tools, keeping the hands warm, and organising workflows correctly.

Rechargeable battery

Bosch sells some cordless power tools without a rechargeable battery. You can tell whether a rechargeable battery is included with the power tool by looking at the packaging.

Charging the battery

  • Use only the chargers listed in the technical data. Only these chargers are matched to the lithium-ion battery of your power tool.

Note: Lithium-ion rechargeable batteries are supplied partially charged according to international transport regulations. To ensure full rechargeable battery capacity, fully charge the rechargeable battery before using your tool for the first time.

Inserting the Battery

Push the charged battery into the battery holder until it clicks into place.

Removing the Battery

To remove the rechargeable battery, press the battery release button and pull the battery out. Do not use force to do this.

The rechargeable battery has two locking levels to prevent the battery from falling out if the battery release button is pressed unintentionally. The rechargeable battery is held in place by a spring when fitted in the power tool.

Battery charge indicator

Note: Not all battery types have a battery charge indicator. The green LEDs on the battery charge indicator indicate the state of charge of the battery. For safety reasons, it is only possible to check the state of charge when the power tool is not in operation.

Press the button for the battery charge indicator Bosch GCB 18V-127 Professional Cordless Band Saw-14 to show the state of charge. This is also possible when the battery is removed.

If no LED lights up after pressing the button for the battery charge indicator, then the battery is defective and must be replaced.

Guide the bandsaw blade (11) bit by bit into the saw blade guides (16). The rear end of the saw blade must touch the bearings in the bottom part of the saw blade guides (16). Guide the bandsaw blade (11) bit by bit around the two rollers (17).

To tension the bandsaw blade (11), swivel the pre-tension lever (12) in the lock sign direction as far as it will go. Check whether the bandsaw blade (11) is running correctly around both rollers (17).

Close the cover (15) and lock it with the locking clips (9).

  • Check that the bandsaw blade (11) is seated correctly. Briefly switch the power tool on and off several times. If the bandsaw blade is not mounted correctly, it can come undone and injure you.

Removing the Bandsaw Blade

Swivel the pre-tension lever (12) as far as it will go in theopen lock sign direction. Release the two locking clips (9) and lift up the cover (15). Pull the bandsaw blade (11) out of the saw blade guides (16) and out of the two rollers (17).

Adjusting the Guide (see figure G)

Always use the guide (10) to ensure safe and precise cuts. Adjust the length of the guide to the relevant cut. To do this, loosen the two screws (18) on the guide using the hex key (8). Pull the guide out (10) as far as required. Re-tighten the two screws (18) using the hex key (8). In order to transport or store the power tool, you can push back the guide (10) as far as it will go.

Dust/Chip Extraction

Dust from materials such as lead-containing coatings, some wood types, minerals, and metal can be harmful to one’s health. Touching or breathing in the dust can cause allergic reactions and/or lead to respiratory infections in the user or bystanders.

Certain dust, such as oak or beech dust, is considered carcinogenic, especially in connection with wood-treatment additives (chromate, wood preservative). Materials containing asbestos may only be worked on by specialists.

  • Provide for good ventilation of the working place.
  • It is recommended to wear a P2 filter-class respirator.

Observe the relevant regulations in your country for the materials to be worked with.

  • Avoid dust accumulation at the workplace. Dust can easily ignite.

Operation

Starting Operation

Switching On and Off (see figures H−I)

Bosch GCB 18V-127 Professional Cordless Band Saw-8

To switch on the power tool, first press the lock-off switch (6) open lock sign on the rear side of the power tool. Then press the on/off switch (5) and keep it pressed.

Note: For safety reasons, the on/off switch (5) cannot be locked; it must remain pressed during the entire operation. The worklight (14) lights up when the on/off switch (5) is lightly or fully pressed, allowing the work area to be illuminated in poor lighting conditions.
To switch off, release the on/off switch (5). Then press the lock-off switch (6) lock sign on the front side of the power tool to secure the on/off switch (5) against being switched on unintentionally.

Restart Protection

The restart protection feature prevents the power tool from uncontrolled starting after the power supply to it has been interrupted. To restart the tool, set the on/off switch (5) to the off position and then switch the power tool on again.

Controlling/Preselecting the Blade Speed

You can adjust the speed of the bandsaw blade by pressing in the on/off switch (5) to varying extents. You can also preselect the blade speed and change it during operation using the thumbwheel (4).

Bosch GCB 18V-127 Professional Cordless Band Saw-17

The required blade speed depends on the material and the working conditions; it can be ascertained through practical tests.

Temperature-dependent overload protection

In normal conditions of use, the power tool cannot be overloaded. If the power tool is overloaded or the permitted battery temperature is exceeded, the electronics of the power tool will switch off until the temperature returns to within the optimum operating temperature range.

Working Advice

  • Hold the power tool firmly with both hands and make sure you have a stable footing. The power tool can be more securely guided with both hands.

Select a suitable sawing position for your workpiece, so that as many teeth as possible of the bandsaw blade (11) are in the cut (see figure J).

Bosch GCB 18V-127 Professional Cordless Band Saw-9

Switch on the power tool and wait for the motor to reach the required speed. Place the power tool onto the workpiece using the guide (10) and slowly lower the bandsaw blade (11) into the cut.

Work with moderate pressure and uniform feed. Reduce the pressure just before ending the cut and slightly raise the power tool, so that it does not fall on the workpiece.

Adjusting the Blade Tracking (see figures K–L)

Regularly check the height of the bandsaw blade (11) on the roller (17). The distance between the bandsaw blade and the upper edge of the roller must not exceed 3 mm. If the distance is larger than this, the blade tracking must be readjusted:

  1. Loosen the locking nut for the blade tracking (19) anticlockwise using the socket spanner (20).
  2. Turn the screw for adjusting the blade tracking (21) by one rotation using a commercially available cross-headed screwdriver:
To lower the bandsaw blade(11 , turn the screw (21) clockwise.
To raise the bandsaw blade (11), turn the screw (21) anticlockwise.
  3. To preselect the blade speed, set the thumbwheel (4) to setting 1.
  4. Insert a rechargeable battery (3).
  5. Switch on the power tool and allow the bandsaw blade (11) to run for one rotation.
  6. Switch the power tool off and remove the rechargeable battery (3).
  7. Check the height of the bandsaw blade (11) on the roller (17). If necessary, repeat steps 2 to 5 until the distance between the bandsaw blade and the upper edge of the roller is under 3 mm.
  8. Retighten the locking nut for the blade tracking (19) clockwise using the socket spanner (20).
Note: The screw for adjusting the blade tracking (21) only changes the height of the roller being driven (17). This enables the entire track of the bandsaw blade (11) to be adjusted.

Hanging Hook

Your power tool is equipped with a hanging hook (13) to hang it from when it is switched off. To prevent injuries and damage, only hang the power tool using a stable and suitable means of attachment.

  • When the power tool is hung up, take care that the saw blade is protected from accidental contact. This poses a risk of injury.

Storing the Power Tool

If you do not use the power tool over an extended period of time, release the pre-tensioning of the bandsaw blade (11) to extend the service life of the bandsaw blade. To do this, swivel the pre-tension lever (12) as far as it will go in the open lock sign direction.

Before recommissioning the power tool, swivel the pre-tension lever (12) as far as it will go in the direction to tension the bandsaw blade (11). Check whether the bandsaw blade (11) is correctly running in the saw blade guides (16) and around the rollers (17).

Maintenance and Service

Maintenance and Cleaning

  • Remove the battery from the power tool before carrying out work on the power tool (e.g., maintenance, changingthe  tool, etc.). The battery should also be removed for transport and storage. There is a risk of injury from unintentionally pressing the on/off switch.

Bosch GCB 18V-127 Professional Cordless Band Saw- FAQs

How does a cordless band saw work?

The band saw uses a continuous blade loop powered by a motor. When switched on, the blade moves and gradually cuts through the material as you guide it into position.

How much power does the Bosch GCB 18V-127 need?

This cordless band saw operates on an 18V lithium-ion battery, eliminating the need for a direct power supply and offering portability.

What materials can be cut with this band saw?

It is suitable for cutting metal pipes, profiles, and plastic materials with clean and precise results. Always use the correct blade type for the material.

What are the main safety practices when using a band saw?

Keep hands at least 4 inches from the blade, adjust the blade guard close to the material, wear eye protection, and never leave the saw running unattended.

Why is blade tension important?

Correct tension prevents the blade from wandering or breaking. Too little tension causes inaccurate cuts, while too much tension stresses the blade.

Why do band saws have multiple speeds?

Different speeds are needed for cutting various materials. Lower speeds are ideal for metals, while higher speeds are suited for wood and softer materials.

What are common disadvantages of a band saw?

Blades can wear or stretch over time, requiring regular maintenance. They also need lubrication to prevent overheating and extend blade life.

How should I maintain my Bosch cordless band saw?

Check and replace worn blades, keep the machine clean, ensure proper lubrication, inspect belts and battery connections, and store it safely when not in use.
