SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS

This appliance is intended for household use only.
WARNING Electrical Shock Hazard: This appliance is provided with a polarized plug (one wide blade) to reduce the risk of electric shock. The plug fits only one way into a polarized outlet. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the plug by modifying the plug in any way or by using an adapter. If the plug does not fit fully into the outlet, reverse the plug. If it still does not fit, have an electrician replace the outlet. The length of the cord used on this appliance was selected to reduce the hazards of becoming tangled in or tripping over a longer cord. If a longer cord is necessary, an approved extension cord may be used. The electrical rating of the extension cord must be equal to or greater than the rating of the appliance. Care must be taken to arrange the extension cord so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children or accidentally tripped over. To avoid an electrical circuit overload, do not use another high-wattage appliance on the same circuit as this appliance.

WARNING: Burn Hazard.

  • If overflow occurs, unplug the coffee maker and allow it to cool.
  • To avoid overflow, keep ground coffee below the MAX fill.
  • Fully insert the travel mug onto the drip tray cover or the cup onto the cup rest.

NOTES:

  • If there is no water in the Water Reservoir, the red (ON/OFF) Button will blink for 30 seconds, and the Coffee Maker will not brew. Add water to the Water Reservoir and press the (ON/OFF) Button to start brewing.
  • Coffee Maker will automatically shut off after the brew cycle is complete.
  • When using whole bean coffee, a medium automatic drip coffee grind will yield the best results. Be careful not to overgrind, since very finely ground coffee can cause overflow.
  • If overflow occurs, first try switching to the BOLD setting, or use slightly fewer grounds. BOLD setting dispenses water at a slower rate, allowing more contact time and better coffee extraction from coffee grounds.
  • Always add Grounds Catcher before adding The Scoop®.
    Tips:
  • For hotter coffee, rinse the mug or travel mug with warm water before brewing.
  • More coffee grounds are not better. Overfilling The Scoop® does not allow room for brewing. Water can overflow,w and weak coffee will dispense into the cup.
  • Do not pack your grounds. Packing grounds into The Scoop® forms a firm surface that won’t let water through, dispensing weak coffee into a cup.

Coffee Measurement

WaterGround Coffee
8 oz. (237 mL)8 g = 1.5 tbsp
14 oz. (414 mL)15 g = 3 tbsp
  • Do not exceed 15 g of grounds in The Scoop® during any brew cycle.
  • Measurements are recommendations only. You can vary amounts and types of grounds to your preference.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes after brewing before emptying The Scoop® and rinsing the Removable Grounds Catcher.

Tips for Best-Tasting Coffee

  • All coffees are made from either arabica beans or robusta beans, or some combination of both. Arabica beans are slightly more expensive, but tend to produce better-tasting coffee.
  • Ground coffee will become stale much faster than whole beans. If buying pre-ground coffee, choose a package with the latest expiration date or a smaller quantity.
  • Try to use freshly ground coffee within about a week of grinding.
  • Using a water filter, filtered water, or bottled water will yield better-tasting coffee than some tap water.
  • Make sure your coffee maker is clean. See the “Care and Cleaning” section.
  • Soft water causes poor coffee extraction, leading to poor-tasting coffee. Use filtered, spring, or bottled water if your water is soft.

Care and Cleaning

  1. Unplug.
  2. Wash Removable Water Reservoir with Hinged Lid in hot, soapy water. Rinse and dry. The Water Reservoir is not dishwasher-safe. The Scoop®, Grounds Catcher, and Drip Tray Cover are dishwasher-safe in the Top Rack only. DO NOT use the “SANI” setting on the dishwasher. “SANI” cycle temperatures could damage your product.
  3. Wipe the outside of the Coffee Maker with a damp cloth or sponge. Dry.

Monthly Cleaning

  1. Unplug.
  2. Pour 1/2 cup (125 mL) of plain white vinegar and 1/2 cup (125 mL) of cold water into the Water Reservoir.
  3. Place travel mug on Drip Tray Cover.
  4. Plug into an outlet.
  5. Press the (ON/OFF) Button once. After 30 seconds, press the Button to turn off the Coffee Maker.
  6. After 30 minutes, press the (ON/OFF) Button to finish the brewing cycle.
  7. Empty the travel mug and clean.
  8. Brew one cycle with clean water before brewing coffee.

Troubleshooting

Coffee tastes bad.

  • Coffee Maker needs cleaning. See Care and Cleaning on page 6.
  • Coffee grounds are too coarse or too fine. Set the coffee grinder to automatic drip grind.
  • Poor coffee quality and freshness.
  • Soft water causes poor coffee extraction, leading to poor-tasting coffee. Use filtered, spring or bottled water if your water is soft.

Water is on the counter under the unit.

  • Overfilled Water Reservoir. Do not add more than 40 oz (1183 mL) of water.

The Coffee Maker will not brew, and the red (ON/OFF) Button is blinking.

  • Add water. If there is no water in the Water Reservoir and a brew button is pressed, the unit will not brew.

Weak coffee.

  • First, try brewing using the BOLD setting. If coffee is still too weak, adjust the water/coffee ratio by using slightly less water and/or more grounds. Be careful not to exceed the MAX fill for grounds.

Coffee overflows from The Scoop®.

  • Use a lesser amount of ground coffee.
  • Use the BOLD setting for flavored, finely ground, premium brand ground coffees and decaf coffees.
  • When using whole bean coffee, a medium automatic drip coffee grind will yield the est results. Be careful not to overgrind, since very finely ground coffee can cause overflow in this unit.
  • To prevent overflows, always use both The Scoop® and Grounds Catcher together while brewing.
  • Do not use soft water. Use filtered, spring, or bottled water.
  • Overfilling The Scoop® does not allow room for brewing. Water can overflow, and weak coffee will dispense into the cup.
  • Packing coffee grounds into The Scoop® forms a firm surface that won’t let water through, dispensing weak coffee into a cup.

Coffee overflows from a mug or a travel mug.

  • To prevent coffee overflowing from a mug/travel mug, make sure the correct button was pressed; select 8 oz or 14 oz to fill a cup or travel mug.

Excessive Steam during brewing.

  • Switch to “High-Altitude Calibration”
  • Enter high altitude mode by pressing and releasing simultaneously the BOLD and 8 oz buttons for 5 seconds.
  • ON/OFF Light, BOLD Light, 8 oz Light, and 14 oz Light will flash 5 times to confirm that High Altitude Mode has been activated.
  • The coffee maker is now ready to brew.
NOTE: To reset the unit back to its default settings, unplug the unit and leave it unplugged for 2 minutes.\
