Before working inside your computer
CAUTION: To avoid damaging the components and cards, handle them by their edges and avoid touching pins and contacts.

Before you begin
- Save and close all open files and exit all open applications.
- Shut down your computer.
Windows 8.1: On the Start screen, click or tap the power icon → Shut down. Windows 7: Click or tap Start → Shut down.
NOTE: If you are using a different operating system, see the documentation of your operating system for shut-down instructions. - Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets.
- Disconnect all cables such as telephone cables, network cables, and so on, from your computer.
- Disconnect all attached devices and peripherals, such as keyboard, mouse, monitor, and so on, from your computer.
- Remove any media card and optical disc from your computer, if applicable.

WARNING: Disconnect all power sources before opening the computer cover or panels. After you finish working inside the
computer, replace all covers, panels, and screws before connecting to the power source.

CAUTION: You should only perform troubleshooting and repairs as authorized or directed by the Dell technical assistance team. CAUTION: Before touching anything inside your computer, ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface, such as the metal at the back of the computer. While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to dissipate static electricity, which could harm internal components.
CAUTION: When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its pull tab, not on the cable itself. Some cables have connectors with locking tabs or thumb screws that you must disengage before disconnecting the cable. When disconnecting cables, keep them
evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. When connecting cables, ensure that the ports and connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.
CAUTION: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device.
CAUTION: Press and eject any installed card from the media card reader.

The procedures in this document may require the following tools:
- Philips screwdriver

After working inside your computer
CAUTION: Leaving stray or loose screws inside your computer may severely damage your computer.
- Replace all screws and ensure that no stray screws remain inside your computer.
- Connect any external devices, peripherals, and cables you removed before working on your computer.
- Replace any media cards, discs, and any other parts that you removed before working on your computer.
- Connect your computer and all attached devices to their electrical outlets.
- Turn on your computer.
Removing the base cover

Procedure
- Close the display and turn the computer over.
- Using your fingertips, turn the system badge over.
- Remove the screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest assembly.

- Starting from the back of the computer, pry up the base cover using a plastic scribe.

Replacing the base cover

Procedure
- Align the screw holes on the base cover with the screw holes on the palm-rest assembly and snap the base cover into place.
- Using your fingertips, turn the system badge over.
- Replace the screws that secure the base cover to the palm-rest assembly.
- Turn the system badge over and keep it in place.
Removing the battery

Remove the base cover.
Procedure
- Disconnect the battery cable from the system board.
- Peel off the tapes that secure the speaker cable to the battery.
- Remove the screws that secure the battery to the palm-rest assembly.

- Turn the computer over, open the display, and press the power button for about 5 seconds to ground the system board.

Replacing the battery

Procedure
- Align the screw holes on the battery with the screw holes on the palm rest assembly.
- Adhere to the tapes that secure the speaker cable to the battery.
- Replace the screws that secure the battery to the palm-rest assembly.
- Connect the battery cable to the system board.

Replace the base cover.
Removing the solid-state drive

CAUTION: Solid-state drives are fragile. Exercise care when handling the hard drive.
CAUTION: To avoid data loss, do not remove the solid-state drive while the computer is in sleep or in state.
Prerequisites
- Remove the base cover.
- Remove the battery.
Procedure
- Remove the screw that secures the solid-state drive to the system board.
- Slide and remove the solid-state drive from the solid-state drive slot.

Replacing the solid-state drive

CAUTION: Solid-state drives are fragile. Exercise care when handling the hard drive.
Procedure
- Align the notches on the solid-state drive with the tabs in the solid-state drive slot.
- Slide the solid-state drive at an angle into the solid-state drive slot.
- Press the other end of the solid-state drive down and replace the screw that secures the solid-state drive to the system board.
Post-requisites
- Replace the battery.
- Replace the base cover.
Removing the wireless card

Prerequisites
- Remove the base cover.

Procedure
- Remove the screw that secures the wireless-card bracket to the system board.
- Lift the wireless card bracket off the wireless card.
- Disconnect the wireless card cables from the wireless card.
- Slide and remove the wireless card out of the wireless card slot.

Replacing the display assembly

Procedure
- Slide the palm-rest assembly under the display hinges and align the screw holes on the palm-rest assembly with the screw holes on the display hinges.
- Replace the screws that secure the palm-rest assembly to the display hinges.
- Close the palm-rest assembly.
- Route the display cable through the routing guides on the fan.
- Align the screw hole on the display cable with the screw hole on the I/O board.
- Replace the screw that secures the display cable to the I/O board.
- Connect the media card reader cable to the I/O board.
- Adhere to the tapes that secure the display cable to the fan and the I/O board.
- Connect the display cable to the system board.
- Align the screw holes on the display-cable bracket with the screw holes on the system board.
- Replace the screws that secure the display-cable bracket to the system board.
- Adhere the tape over the display-cable bracket.
- Connect the wireless card cables to the wireless card.
- Align the screw hole on the wireless-card bracket with the screw hole on the system board.
- Replace the screw that secures the wireless-card bracket to the system board.
- Adhere to the tape that secures the antenna cables to the system board.
- Connect the touch-screen cable (optional) and camera cable to the system board.
Post-requisites
- Replace the battery.
- Replace the base cove.
Removing the system board
WARNING: Before working inside your computer, read the safety information that shipped with your computer and follow the steps in Before working inside your computer. After working inside your computer, follow the instructions in After working inside your

NOTE: Your computer’s Service Tag is stored in the system board. You must enter the Service Tag in the BIOS setup program after you replace the system board.
NOTE: Replacing the system board removes any changes you have made to the BIOS using the BIOS setup program. You must make the desired changes again after you replace the system board.
NOTE: Before disconnecting the cables from the system board, note the location of the connectors so that you can reconnect them correctly after you replace the system board.

- Remove the base cover.

- Remove the wireless card.
- Remove the solid-state drive.
- Remove the heat sink.
Procedure
- Peel off the tape that secures the antenna cables and power-adapter port cable to the system board.
- Disconnect the camera cable, touch-screen cable (optional), power adapter port cable, and coin-cell battery cable from the system board.

Replacing the system board

NOTE: Your computer’s Service Tag is stored in the system board. You must enter the Service Tag in the BIOS setup program after you replace the system board.
NOTE: Replacing the system board removes any changes you have made to the BIOS using the BIOS setup program. You must make the desired changes again after you replace the system board.
Procedure
- Slide the system board under the tabs on the palm-rest assembly and align the screw holes on the system board with the screw holes on the palm-rest assembly.
- Replace the screws that secure the system board to the palm-rest assembly.
- Slide the I/O-board cable, the touch-pad cable, and the keyboardcontrols board cable into the system board and press down on the connector latches to secure the cables.
- Connect the camera cable, the touch-screen cable (optional), the power-adapter port cable, the coin-cell battery cable, the speaker cable, the fan cable, and the display cable to the system board.
- Adhere the tape that secures the antenna cables and power-adapter port to the system board.
- Align the screw holes on the display-cable bracket with the screw holes on the system board.
- Replace the screws that secure the display-cable bracket to the system board.
- Adhere to the tapes that secure the speaker cable to the system board.

- Replace the heat sink.
- Replace the solid-state drive.

Removing the power adapter port

How do I run diagnostics on my Dell XPS 13?
Turn on your laptop and press the F12 key when the Dell logo appears. Use the arrow keys to select Diagnostics from the boot menu and press Enter. This will launch the Enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment to check hardware components.
How can I power cycle or hard reset my Dell XPS 13?
Unplug the charger, remove the base cover and battery, then press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to drain any remaining power (also known as flea power).
Does the Dell XPS 13 have a reset button?
While there’s no dedicated reset button, you can perform an RTC reset by holding the power button for 25 seconds while the device is off and connected to AC power.
What should I do if my Dell XPS 13 won’t turn on?
First, unplug all external devices and connect the AC adapter. Then press and hold the power button for 30–35 seconds. The power LED will blink three times to indicate a power drain.
How do I force shut down my Dell XPS laptop?
If your system is unresponsive, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it off. If you’re troubleshooting a no POST issue, hold it for 25 seconds to reset the RTC battery.
Can I turn on my Dell laptop while the lid is closed?
